THE SNOW IS HERE....
* The students need to remember to bring shoes to change into in the classroom. It is not comfortable to wear warm boots all day. The students are welcome to leave a pair of shoes/sneakers on their table each night so they don't have to transport them daily in their backpacks.
*****An extra note about sneakers- Please make sure the students have sneakers for gym. Crocs are very popular, but not very safe for gym. Please make sure to pack sneakers on gym day, Wednesday, so your child can change into sneakers for gym. THANKS!
* The primary teachers have discussed the used of sleds on the playground during recess. Students may bring sleds from home, but the sleds have to be soft roll up sleds. Hard, or big sleds will not be allowed for safety reasons, and also because we have no place to store them in the classroom. Please let me know if you have any questions.
* Some students may choose not to bring snowpants or boots, but please make sure they always are prepared with a warm coat, hats, and mittens/gloves. The classroom is looking for some donations of extra mittens. Thanks!!
We Love Reading Our Own Books!!!
Reading groups are off to a great start. The students are so proud to have their own books that they can read. Thank you for supporting our reading at home. The students love sharing their books with you, and they have been very responsible with returning their books. I have also included some flashcards with our popcorn words. The attached note reminded you to keep the flashcards in the reading bag for practice each time the bag comes home. Thanks again for all of your support!!!
VOWELS
So far this year we have worked on the vowels Aa and Ee. We worked on words that started with the letter sounds, but mostly did lots of CVC(consonant/vowel/consonant) word work. The students have been able to make and read so many new words. It is very exciting.
MATH
In math we have been using calculators. In our classroom, we use solar powered calculators. The students have learned how to use many of the keys on the calculator. So far we have worked on telling the calculator to count on by 1s, 5s, 10s, 100s, and 2s. The students love using the calculators so much that they often ask to use them during our free play time.
FUNKY FRIDAYS
We have had our first Funky Friday. Funky Fridays are fun school spirit days that help us get through the winter. Every Friday until the first day of Spring, KCS will have a different school spirit theme day. This past Friday was stuffed animal day. Next Friday, January 19th will be pins and buttons day. Everyone will try to wear as many pins and buttons as they can. It is fun to see the different types of pins and buttons that people come with. I will post the Funky Friday schedule once I get it.
PRACTICE DRILLS??
We have been practicing drills at school in case there is ever an emergency. Sometimes the children may come home and tell you that we had a drill. There are three basic drills that we have been practicing. Everyone knows the standard fire drills when we leave the building, and meet at a designated spot on the hill behind the school. Two other drills we practice are lockdowns and hold in places. These two drills are practiced in case there is ever an emergency in the building. Depending on the nature of the emergency, lights may be turned off, shades may be drawn, but the doors and windows will be locked each time. The students have done a fantastic job with all of our drills. These drills are unannounced, so we work very hard together to follow the correct steps to be safe. Please let me know if you have any questions.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
I am anxious to see all of my kindergarten faces tomorrow!!! Please remember to bring your beach towels back to school for quiet reading time.
Parents, as discussed, we will be starting reading groups. Your child will start working on books at their individual reading levels. The books that they bring home at night will have a reading card. The card will indicate what we worked on in the book, and then you will need to sign your initials after you have listened to your child read the book once or twice. Please note on the card that I have stated it is okay for the students to use the pictures to help them solve words, but they must also look at and point to the words as they read. Many parents do get frustrated when their child memorizes the entire sentence and rambles it as their eyes stare at the picture. I will be working with the students on many reading strategies, and we will work hard to keep you posted so that we can all work together on our reading adventure!! We will try to get a new book home 2-3 times a week.
One last reminder that I do ask the students to wear shoes or sneakers in school. When your child wears snow boots to school, please make sure that you pack them a change of shoes to wear in the classroom. It would also be a great idea to pack an extra pair of socks in backpacks in case feet get wet out on the playground.
