February 29

We hope all our families had a wonderful winter break!

March is the month for the MEA testing for grades 3, 4 and 5. We will begin the week of March 3, and complete any makeups the week of March 17th. All students are required to take the MEA, so unless there is a really good reason, please be sure your students are here during their testing period. It is also important the all students are on time for school…if testing has begun, they will need to wait to enter their classroom until there is a break, and then they will need to make up the portion they missed. Students that are rested, have had a good breakfast and know that we only expect them to do their best will approach the MEA comfortably. Thanks for your help with this!

On March 7th at a special KCPTA meeting, Andy Vail, science consultant, and Nancy Barrett and Lisa Miller will be presenting the new science program. Please join us for this informative presentation right after FMM in the art room!

The KCPTA rolling food drive continues!! We have had a great response, so thanks to everyone who has contributed…it is appreciated! The items for February were: condiments:  mayo, mustard, maple syrup, ketchup, relish, etc. These will continue for the month of March! There is a box in the lobby for your donations. Thank you!

Mark your calendars! On March 7th, at 6:30 PM, the KCPTA will sponsor our very first Line Dance/Square Dance! Casual dress and fun for all! Join us!!!

MSK announcement for all fifth grade parents: The MSK placement process for our fifth graders is beginning and will be underway by March 1st. Student schedules should be available for parents and students by June 1st this year.

Our second Mix It Up Lunch was a great success! Many thanks to Mrs. Abrams and the School Climate Committee for the planning for this event.

Congratulations to the KCS Klawstrowfobicks and BeeHives (Those wigs!) for their outstanding performances at the EFK second annual spelling bee! A special thanks to Titus Tidewater, KCS mascot, for making a special appearance!

Possible Lollipop Recall

It has been brought to our attention that there is news of a recall of Valentine's Day candy, specifically, lollipops.

Authorities issued a safety alert Thursday after a lollipop marketed under Pokemon Valentine Cards and Pops was found with a blade-like piece of metal. The lollipop came from a Dollar Store in Lakeland, Fla., which received the candy imported from China through Sherwood Brands of Maryland. Dollar Stores pulled similar items from its shelves nationwide as a precaution and warned people who previously had purchased the candy not to give it out.

Although we have not heard specific news of this recall in Maine and while it may be a rumor, you may want to check any Valentine's Day treats you have at home.

As many of you know, we have an Emergency Operations Team at KCS and a district wide team as well. Monthly drills (evacuation, lock down and hold-in-place) are held to ensure that we are all familiar with procedures should any sort of real emergency occur. Teachers take great care that all students are safe and comfortable during a drill, and that everyone understands the purpose of having them. If you are in the building when a drill occurs, you will need to participate with the staff and students. We appreciate your support and understanding that safety is a major concern for all of us. If you have questions about this, please feel free to email me.

Kennebunkport Consolidated PTA (KCPTA) is hosting a special meeting for parents to discuss this year’s Circus Smirkus fundraiser on Monday February 11th at 6:30 PM at Consolidated School in the art room…please join us!

This past week our grade three through grade five students had an opportunity to hear Stan Davis, the author of Schools Where Everyone Belongs. Staff met with him in a positive question and answer session and he also did a very valuable evening session for parents on raising resilient and responsible children. Thanks to Joanne Abrams and the counselors at KES and SRS for arranging this opportunity for students, staff and parents. It was well worth their time and effort!

Mark your calendars! On March 7th, at 6:30 PM, the KCPTA will sponsor our very first Line Dance/Square Dance! Casual dress and fun for all! Join us!!!

Please stop in and check LOST AND FOUND…it is overflowing! It all goes next Friday, February 15th , so please stop in by Thursday PM. Thanks!

I had a great trip to Hannover, Germany at the end of January. The school was wonderful…a pre-K through grade 12 international school…with about 500 students. The majority of the students are fluently bi-lingual, pointing out the need for our own students to have an opportunity to learn a foreign language. The preliminary visit process is busy, and the weather was rainy the entire time, so any sort of sightseeing was at a minimum. Thanks for all the many good wishes for safe travel…everything went smoothly, and it is good to be home!

We will be having a second “Mix It Up Lunch” on February 15th to kick off our winter break. Many thanks to Mrs. Abrams and the School Climate Committee for the planning for this event.

Congratulations to our own Bert Austin, who has received the True North Adult Recognition Award in the category of Support Staff! We are so happy to see Bert receive this recognition! She is most deserving and certainly is a source of support to all of us here at Consolidated. Bert and the other award recipients will be honored at a reception on Monday, February 11th, and will be given their awards at the Board Meeting that evening. You can watch…live on five! Congratulations, Bert!

REMEMBER! Next Wednesday, February 13th, at 7:00 PM, at SRS, we will be having the second annual Education Foundation of the Kennebunks Annual Spelling Bee!! Come join Titus Tidewater, our lobster mascot, in supporting the KCS teams: The Clawstrofobicks and The Bee Hives (Those wigs!)! Admission and popcorn are FREE! Join us for a fun evening in support of a wonderful cause!
