This morning the KCS 5th grade math team attended the 4th and final meet for the school year in Portland. Schools from all over Southern Maine were represented. The KCS team did a fantastic job. The total team score was more than double the score from the previous meet. It is great to see a team work hard all year and end on such a high note!

Gifted And Talented Education Services (GATES) identification will take place in the spring for third (3rd) and fifth (5th) grade. All students in grades 3 and 5 are screened by GATES staff for identification. If, however, you would like to formally nominate your child, please pick up a form in the school office. For more information about the identification process and the criteria, please check out the district website. Forms are due back by March 31st. Thank you. GATES Staff

Our 2nd math meet of the school year was held on Thursday, January 18th. Kennebunkport Consolidated School had a team of eight fifth grade students participate. Our next meet is on March 22nd.

Cathy Kremer, a parent of a student from Kennebunk, is organizing a parent group to discuss G/T issues. She asked me to forward an invitation to parents who may be interested. GT Parent Meeting
Our first meeting will be in the Hank's Room downstairs at the Kennebunk Free Library
Route One, Kennebunk on
Tuesday, December 5: from 6 PM until 7 PM

The group will:
Provide a forum for learning about GT
Share our experiences, and perceived needs of GTs
Share books, web sites, research articles, and State of Maine program guidelines
Provide speakers including GT educators or experts
Share ways to provide learning opportunities outside of the schools including summer camp programs
Advocate for clearer State guidelines to provide minimum standards to all schools throughout Maine

Any adult is welcome, regardless of whether your child has been identified. Young children are welcome at the library; but must be attended by adults. Thank you.

MOO! It is time to start the C.O.W. (Challenge of the Week) here at KCS. It is a voluntary challenging math activity open to all students. There are 2 sets of challenges available each week. Set A will primarily come from a book of highly challenging math problems for 2^nd and 3^rd graders and Set B will mostly come from a similar book for 4^th - 6^th grade students. Although the problems are geared toward certain grades, younger students may want to try and some students may want to start with set A and work into set B regardless of grade. The challenges will be available each Thursday and due back no later than the following Tuesday. A record is kept of the students who participate throughout the year and those who consistently participate will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the year Good Luck! Have Fun! The KCS 5th grade math team competed in their last meet for the year on Tuesday, May 2nd. The team members achieved their highest score for the year. Michael Ottman placed 2nd and received a perfect score on the geometry task. Sierra Kuun placed 5th. Congratulations!

This is just a reminder that every Thursday a new Challenge of the Week (COW) paper is available. The purpose of the challenge is for students to have fun and recognize math all around. It offers an opportunity for students to take a different look at math. Students should seek help from friends, siblings, parents, and anyone else who is willing! If one problem becomes frustrating, it is all right to go on to the next problem. This is meant to be a voluntary activity and students may participate as often as they would like. With each week's challenge you will find the answers to the previous week's challenge on the back. Good Luck!
