Do you know who Wilson Bentley was?

Snowflake Bentley.jpgAsk your child who Wilson Bentley was.  He is also known as Snowflake Bentley.  I think your child will be able to tell you some interesting information about this scientist that lived around the turn of the century.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!

MLK.jpg This week, we learned about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The main message was that people should not be judged by what is on the outside.  We learned about how Dr. King fought for equal rights in a peaceful manner.  What happened to Dr. King is not easy for first and second graders to understand but his message is something of which we can all be reminded!

calendar.jpgThis week our centers revolved around the months of the year and practicing the spelling of all the months.  We will be having a test on this on Thursday.  They are doing a great job remembering the poem of how many days are in each month.

We finished up our winter unit on Life Cycles in Science and we are moving on to our Motion unit.  We will go back to Life Cycles in the Spring.

We continued working on persuasive writing.  Our persuasive letters are posted in the hall and beware because the next set of persuasive letters are coming home to convince you to change something!   Have a wonderful weekend, Nancy

Message from the Superintendent

Dear MSAD71 Parents, Staff and Members of the Kennebunk High School Student Body,
On Tuesday afternoon, January 8, high school officials were notified of an alleged threat made toward Kennebunk High School. The police were immediately notified and took action. Through deliberations with them, and due to the fact that the suspect was apprehended and detained, we decided to hold school today. We continue to be in constant communication with our police department to monitor the situation and assure student and staff safety.

We are thankful for the immediate and thoughtful response by our law enforcement agents in assisting us in keeping our school safe. We assure you that the safety of all will remain our top priority.

Below is the press release that our police have provided us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas Farrell

Happy 2008!

snow.jpgWe are getting back into the routine of school after our holiday break.  Students have all been very excited to be back.  We have been working on writing a persuasive letter to somebody in the school about something that students would like to change whether it is recess every day or more cheese sticks at lunch.  Students had to give three reasons to persuade somebody to change.  The letters are very cute!  Several students wrote to me and want to have snack time anytime they want in the class.  I may give it a try and see how it works.  Next week, I will be doing more of this kind of writing and reading assessments  with some of the students.  If a student is reading above grade level, I usually do not retest them until the end of the year so they can just keep reading.   Students will be getting their baggie books but I will not be able to be reading with them in class until I finish my assessments.

Thank you for all your gifts and your kind words over Christmas.  It was all truly appreciated.  I do hope you use your coupons and get a quiet cup of coffee or get your child to clean their room!  Happy new year to all of you!  Nancy
