Science Companion
We started the units in our Science Companion book this week. Students were given a group of objects and asked what they wondered about these objects. First, I modelled wondering if a straw would push a cotton ball if there were holes in the straw. This proceeded into other "I wonders" and we tested them out. They were given a set of objects and asked to see what they wondered. They then tested it out. They worked together in small groups.
The next day, they were given scallop shells and then they had to make careful observations. I showed them with a clam shell how you could notice details and even though they were the same clam shell, there were differences between the two. They were given a scallop shell and an index card. They drew a picture on an index card of their shell with words to describe their shell. Then we mixed up the shells and the cards and tried to match it up. The next day, we did the same shell activity with different snail shells and then they used magnifying glasses to see in more detail.
Students really enjoyed these science activities and are starting to think more like a scientist. This is the first part of our science companion lessons.

Living and Non-Living
What a great class this is. They have loads of personality and we are really getting into the routine!
We learned about the charateristics of living things this week. Ask your child and they should be able to tell you that ALL living things 1- move or resond to the environment, 2 - eat, drink and breathe, 3- grows and changes and 4 - reproduces.

We also talked about life cycles and the circle of life with many different kinds of animals, plants, etc. They have been able to use the word metamorphis when describing a butterfly and a frog.

2,4,6,8 Multiage is really great!
I am so excited to have such a wonderful class this year. You will see them skipping down the hall as they are all so happy and seem to have such a joy within them! What a pleasure! They are all getting used to routines and understanding what my expectations are for them. This week we talked about fire safety and our safety in our classroom and started our work centers. Next week we will focus on living and non-living.
