Water Cycle to Tidal Pools

We spent the week learning about the water cycle.  We watched a movie on Friday with an on-line quiz at the end and the kids were all commenting on how easy it was as they were correctly explaining the different parts of the water cycle.

We will leave that behind and move on to our last big unit of the year where we look at the familiar local environment of the tidal pools.  Students were asked to bring in three facts on Tuesday about the tidal pool animal that they chose.  We will be using that information to help us write in our book.  Next week we will spend a lot of time on that goal.

The tie dyed tee shirts came out very well.  I will be keeping them at school until the June 7th field trip and they can go home after that.

I hope you all have some time over this Memorial Day weekend to honor any of your deceased family and friends in whatever way that is meaningful to you.

HELP!

Help!   Is there anyone that can rototill a garden for me?  I am planning to plant some milkweed plants with my students to help the monarch butterflies as part of a grant I received from the Live Monarch Foundation and will need to get some soil ready.  There has been less habitat for the butterflies to make their migration route down to Mexico and the plan is to plant all these gardens along the way.  Please let me know if you can help in any way.  Thanks.

A male and female betta fish are swimming very comfortably in our fish tank.  Students will see them for the first time on Monday morning!   Have a good weekend.

This week, we learned about the water cycle using the words condensation,  precipitation, evaporation, runoff and seepage.  They did a great job!  Ask your child to explain it to you!  This also led to a discussion on why we should keep the water clean that is on this earth since it is the same water that the dinosaurs drank!

Next week, we will start a long study of tidal pools, culminating with our field trip to Odiorne on Thursday, June 7th and our next class book.  It will be similar to the one we made earlier in the year called Follow the Kennebunk River.  I am planning to do it in two parts, beginning with fiction stories the students write about tidal pool creatures and ending with non-fiction facts about the same creatures.  It will take us to the end of the year so it will be printed and ready for pick up at Consolidated around the fourth of July.  More information will be coming about this!

If you have not sent in your $2.50 for Odiorne or the white t-shirt for tie dying, please send it ASAP.  We need them all in by Monday as we will be tie-dying in our art class and we have to submit the money to Central Office on that day.  Thank you to all of you!  Nancy

Learning about the weather

Next week, we will be learning about seasons, the weather and the different types of clouds. I will be on a NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) visitation to an elementary school in Connecticut from Monday to Wednesday.  I may also be taking Thursday off as we have meetings starting at 7:00 a.m. each morning and ending at 10:00 p.m each evening. I am leaving a lot of activities that relate to different books for the students to do while I am gone.  See you when I get back!
