Thank you to KCPTA for paying for Chewonki to come into our classroom today.  This culminated our unit on reptiles.  Students were very knowledgeable anwering the questions that the presenter asked.  They saw a corn snake, a box turtle, a four foot iguana and a small alligator.  It was a wonderful experience!  Thank you KCPTA!

We were off to Antarctica!

penguin2.jpg We learned about the continent of Antarctica this week in class.  Do you know that Antarctica has 70% of the world's water and 90% of the world's ice?  While we were learning about Antarctica, we also learned about the different kinds of penguins and a little bit about the Arctic.  We will finish that this week.

By now, I hope students have started on their reading genre book report.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  I had a couple of questions this week so I will answer them here in case any others had the same confusion.

Your child is supposed to read one book from EACH of the genres listed.  After s/he reads that book, then s/he completes ONE page from the handouts.  You have a lot of extra handouts so your child can pick the one that interests them.  Lastly, it all goes together on one large poster - a definition of the six genres, the titles of the six books read, and six of the activity sheets, one for each book read.  I hope that clarifies any questions.  If you need help finding books, please contact me.  Thank you.   Nancy

Martin Luther King, Jr.

mlkdrm1.gif There will be no school on Monday in order to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.  We have been learning about him all week.  Fortunately, it is hard for students to understand that this country once segregated due to color.  Next week, we will be travel to Antarctica and learn about this continent and also learn about penguins.

tha_you6.gif A very special thank you to Derek and Derek's dad and Hope and Hope's mom  for painting our cubbies over vacation.  They were badly in need of some sprucing up and repair and now they look brand new.

I am sure it took a lot of time and it was so much appreciated.  It was the first thing all the kids noticed when they came into the class.  Thank you both for the time and the money you both spent to do this for the class.   Smile  Nancy

We started the year off with a wonderful day in the classroom!  Let us hope that will be the tone for the rest of 2007!  Please stop by to pick up your child's timeline's and self portraits. They are really wonderful work and I hate to send them home on the bus.   Hope the new year brings you lots of happy surprises!  Nancy
