We are getting in routine!

We are getting in routine this week.  We started centers in the classroom.  This is the time that I will do guided reading with students when they do independent centers.  The only thing that I have to work on is for them to use whisper voices.  Other than that, they are really doing a great job following directions and seem to all enjoy the routine!

Both second and third graders have started math and are great with this routine.  The second graders ask me every day when they will be getting homework!  That will begin next week.

I have assessed their reading these last weeks to see where they are at.  Many have dropped in their reading but hopefully, it will not be too long before we can get them back to where they were in June of 06.  Tomorrow, I plan to start reading individually with students before I start reading groups. I will be sending home a couple of books to read each evening.  They should read each book one or more times and then write something in their reading journal.  If they have a chapter book, they should read for at least 20 minutes.  Those of you that have not had a reading journal before, there will be ideas to write about and you can start with a few sentences but we will be building that up as the year goes on.  Those of you that have had reading journals, know the rountine.

We started a word study program called Fundations.  Ask them about Echo the owl. We also started cursive writing.    Some students find cursive easier than manuscript and they can use either in the classroom!

We also started to learn keyboarding in the computer lab.  We will start each computer session with fifteen minutes of keyboarding.  It was amazing to watch the third graders that were so anxious to do the skill check!  They knew what comes next!

This class is truly amazing!  They are all working really hard to do well and they seem to all be enjoying their learning.  Each day has been a pleasure for me Smile

P.S.  I am sorry this entry is so long.  I just had so much to tell you!

It was a great first week of school!

I am very excited about this years multiage class!  We have gotten to know each other a little on this first week.  We started our math classes on the first day and we started writing in class.   Next week, we will start our routine of centers in the afternoons and try to tweak our schedule.   It is all going well!

It was delightful to meet all the parents at parent night.  I felt like I did a lot of talking and you may now have questions.  If you do,   please feel free to contact me either at school or via email at nnaimey@msad71.net . As our centers begin to run smoothly, I will be working with students individually in reading.  I hope to start baggie books sometime this week.  Keep reading with your children!
