Goodbye multiage and welcome new students!

big smile.gif

Current students wrote a quick note to the new incoming students this week.  They either welcomed them to class next year or they said goodbye to the multiage class and told them what they would miss most.  These letters with drawings are posted outside the multiage classroom and will I will leave them there throughout the summer.

Not surprisingly, most students loved the 10 to 15 minute time we spent in the gym first thing in the morning. This proved to be a great class time to bond together and it helped students to get their energy out making them more able to focus on their work.  I hope to continue to do that next year on the days the gym is available.

It always surprises me what some of the highlights were.  Students really liked writing as we write a lot in the classroom.  These letters were done in one writing block with smiles on their faces and completed rather quickly, quite a difference from the beginning of the year.  Several students have been working on their class books and mentioned those were a highlight.

Others were more focused on the science arena and mentioned things such as experiments on friction and motion.  There was some talk about our reports on inventors and women in history and some of the research as being a favorite thing to do!  Math was mentioned as students were proud of their ability to do “harder math”.

As I said earlier, I will leave these letters up throughout the summer so if you are in the school, you can drop down with your student to see them.

If your child would like to visit the classroom towards the end of the summer, please feel free to call the school and we can arrange a time.  I have found that to help with those first day jitters.

Viva Mexico!

MAP0086.jpg

We finished our study of Mexico and the United States this week.  They had a good understanding of the similarities and differences between Mexico and the United States.  Be sure to ask them which country has three branches (both) or what the geography is like in Mexico (deserts, rainforests, mountains).  What is the capital of Mexico  (Mexico City).  Why are Diego Riviera and Frida famous (they are both Mexican  artists). What are some holidays in Mexico (Los Posados, Cinco de Mayo and Day of the Dead).  Are they like any holidays in the United States (Los Posados is like Christmas, Cinco de Mayo is like the 4th of July, and Day of the Dead is like Halloween).

We also raced our land yachts this morning and it was very exciting!  All the finalists did very well.  Next week we will be doing a short unit on the new food triangle and the food groups.

Don't forget we have some important dates next week.  Monday is Field Day, Tuesday is Poetry night and Wednesday is our field trip to Portland Observatory and Portland Museum of Art.  Don't forget a bag lunch on that day!
