Mexico and the United States

mexican map.jpg

This week we will finish our study Mexico and compare its culture, community, government, etc to that of the United States.

On Friday, June 2nd we will race our three winning land yachts at Friday morning meeting.  It should be a very exciting race!

I hope you had a lovely Memorial Day weekend.  The weather was really lovely!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to all our students that built their land yachts and especially our land yacht race winners!  Joey's came in third, Gabby's came in second and (drum roll, please)  Heather's came in first!  We all had great fun racing them in the gym.  The top three winners in our class will now race against the top three winners in Mrs. Boyd's class.

Oh, Mexico!

We have started to learn about Mexico this week.  We learned about artifacts and that is how we know so much about these early Mayans due to their artifacts.

We learned about the different biomes and wildlife within the country.

We also realized how many Spanish words we already know and we learned many new words.

Thank you parent volunteers!

Thank you to all the parent volunteers that came to assist our class building land yachts!  Students had designed their land yachts in class then using their designs, they built their yachts. Parents were very busy assisting students with their cutting of the one cm. rods, axles, and masts as they constructed their land yachts.  The room was abuzz with all the activity and in the end, the students were decorating the sails and seeing how their land yachts would roll on the floor while all parents were breathing a sigh of relief!

We are out of tissues in the classroom.  We also need sharpened  pencils and scrap paper in the classroom.

Thank you!

We learned about sound and energy this week!

sound.jpg

This week in class, students were introduced to different kinds of energy and we focused on sound energy.  We did a lot of experiements to show that sound travels as a vibration through the different states of matter.  We used water and tuning forks and slinkys in different experiments this week.  The slinky was a big hit!  I am sure your student could tell you that sound travels as vibrations and I hope they also learned to turn those MP3 players down!
