Have a great vacation with your lovely children! We finished the week studying simple machines and compound machines. Next week the students will design their land yachts and we will be building them on Friday, May 12th. Students will race their land yachts against one another using a fan as power and the top three from our class will race the top three from Mrs. Boyd's class.
After vacation, we will learn about economy and then we will have a long unit about Mexico and will compare the United States to Mexico. If anyone has ever been to Mexico and would like to share artifacts, pictures or experiences, please let me know.
It is supposed to be a lovely week so enjoy the beautiful weather with your child and I will see them on Monday, April 24th when we return to school!

Congratulations to Consolidated students! M.S.A.D. #71 has a writing competition called Writer's Showcase each year. This year we had a finalist or a winner in each grade level! Our students are judged with all the other classes at KES and Sea Road School. Our population is much smaller than these schools so we really had great results. The multiage class was well represented with a third grade winner and a second grade finalist! Congratulations to all and especially Heather and Hope!

We will be performing a few songs with the other second and third graders on Tuesday, April 11th. We will be practicing at 8:45 in the morning and the performance is at 7:00 in the evening. Please feel free to come and listen at either time. The kids sing beautifully and it warms my heart to hear them. I am sure it will be the same for you! See you there!

We spent the week starting to learn about simple machines. We learned about the wheel (and axle), the inclined plane (which includes the wedge and the screw) and levers (first class-i.e. see saw, second class-i.e. wheelbarrow and third class-i.e hockey stick). Ask the kids about the difference of the load, effort and the fulcrum on these levers. We will learn about the other simple machines next week.
In math, we finished up our unit on fractions. This was interesting because we were talking about it in both second and third grade classes. You could hear talk about numerators and denominators all over the room! Second grade is now working on measurement and third grade is working on multiplication and word problems. In third grade, I will be sending home some information on lattice multiplication.
We finished a web hunt on government in the computer lab. This was interesting because we studied government a while ago so it was information that they had remembered.
You can access my April newsletter online. Let me know if you can come in to assist when we build land yachts. Have a great week!

We ended the month of March celebrating Women's History Month. Students learned about Sally Ride, Sacagawea and Amelia Earhart. Students then chose from a large selection of picture books and short biographies to write about some different women in history. These books were written at their reading levels. We had an impromptu discussion on the Nazi flag due to several students’ interest in learning more about Anne Frank. Some of the student work is in the hall, check it out!
Next week, we will start a large unit on simple machines!
