November

The children are working on their first vowel! We have learned that our alphabet is divided into vowels and consonants. Vowels are tricky sounds and can be influenced by other others around them. We know the short and the long sound for a. To help us remember the short sound we think of an apple. We have sorted words that start the same as apple and also sorted pictures that have the short a sound in them. The long a sound is easier for us to sort because it is so much easier to hear in words! We also worked with two sight words...."am"and "at". We learned that not only are they words that can stand alone but they might be a chunk in words we do not know. We practiced some very simple words with "at" and "am" in them and then did some trickier words with those same chunks. They are getting quite skilled at reading at and am three letter words. The children are practicing guided reading skills in a whole group setting using books with "am" and "at" as the focus.

The children are now writing daily in their draft books. They have mastered the left to right and top to bottom writing and having their illustration tell the same story as their words! Now we will focus a bit on spacing, hearing more sounds in words and becoming more independent. "Am" and "at" are now expected to be written correctly amd independently by my authors.

In everyday math our pattern work with the unifix cubes was very successful. The children were introduced to the mathematical labeling of pattern. We are now reading our calendar pattern and other patterns in math language. When we read, for example, a blue, green pattern, the children also practiced reading the pattern using the AB (math language) designation. This has been a challenge for all of us as we think of letters mostly being in our reading and writing work. We have spent time ordering numerals and reviewing digits. Money was revisited and visited Mrs. Mildner's Store and made some difficult but fun purchases with our pennies. In addition to the EM activities we did some apple math. Ask the children how our apple graph turned out!

Thank you to Cole Luggi's family for purchasing more antibacterial cleaner for our tables.

Report cards and conferences are coming! Starting on November 17, you may contact the office and make an appointment to see me in early December. I can't believe we are just about on third of the way through our school year!

News

We have been busy in the K classroom. In literacy we are working on our fourth consonant. Yes, we are learning that our alphabet is made up of vowels and consonants! With each letter so far, we have listened for the sound in the initial position and the ending position. We have also made a list of vocabulary particular to that letter. We have a giant mitten filled with m words, a snake of s words that snakes around the room, and fish filled with f words and finally Henrietta Hen filled with h words. In addition, this week we have made a list of spooky Halloween words. Part of every day is spent on building vocabulary. We continue to work on reading skills at D.E.A.R. time. Wen all know where a cover is, can point and count words in our title, know where the reading starts and which way to go and most importantly that the illustration and the words must make sense. Our first reading strategy has been to look at the picture for help. In writing we have written a class poem, did a timeline of the way to build a house (soon to be a class big book) and write in our draft books several times a week. Yes, this is a busy classroom

Math: Our growing number line continues! We are looking at digits in numerals and learning about what they stand for. We are becoming more familiar with tally marks as we graph our weather each day. This week we will begin to learn about the penny with games, peotry and song. We will do some more measuring. We will continue to work on quantities and learning how to make our numerals.

Science: We still are building in here and the marble run is still the favorite material to use. We have read lots of books on construction and seen a video on how to build a road. This week we will ocmplete one more assessment and explore pulleys and levers. A very big THANK YOU to Jenna's mom, Suzanne, for the fantastic drawings that we used in classwork and for our architecture walk. Thanks also to the moms that helped out as we explored the neighborhood. Perhaps the best part for us was mixing the two classes and working with a friend from the other kindergarten!

Everyday Mathematics

We started Everyday math work with our calendar routines. We are writing numbers on a growing numberline, graphing and tallying the weather each day, looking at patterns and learning the language of the days of the week and the passage of time. In addition to our routines we have explored many different math materials in the room. They have especially liked the buttons, legos and the money! We did some measuring of our heights and we wonder just how much we will grow this year!

Literacy

We have been exploring all different types of letters. We have made our names and the names of our friends in foam letters, plastic letters, wiki stix and many different types of magnet letters. We have also spent quite a bit of time counting letters in words and then counting words in sentences. We will finish up our general letter work looking at the alphabet as a whole with songs, practicing putting the letters in the correct order and reading lots of alphabet books. The childre have started working in their draft books. Draft books are where the children practice writing and composing skills. We will start out working in these two to three times and week and by the end of the year, the children will be writing short stories. All writing work will go home at the end of the year in a writing portfolio. In reading the children have heard some wonderful stories about starting school and about being a good friend. We have started our D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) time each day. So far we have been quietly resting looking at books. Soon this will become a time where I will read with children one on one. We reread many of our books several times. This helps to build confidence in reading as children learn to read a text for different purposes. They may discover new information or reinforce learning that has already taken place. As a book is reread, children begin to see patterns in the structure of the words and the story. These cues are an important skill in learning to read. Of course, just hearing a favorite story again because you want to, is the best reason of all.
