March 2008

Title I students are making great progress in their reading during the month of March. Many students are also attending our weekly Consolidated Book Swap, co-sponsored by Title I and our Consolidated Library. It has been great fun seeing what books students are bringing in to swap.

I have been involved in implementing a new program for our Kindergarten classes to meet the needs of our children requiring the most support in reading. It is an early reading intervention program published by the Scott Foresman company, and includes a variety of letter identification and sound lessons, writing practice, and sound manipulation for sight vocabulary. The program also includes a dinosaur puppet who makes an occasional appearance. This is a brand new program started in February and it is being implemented District-wide. The children have learned quickly how the program runs, and we will continue to monitor for progress.

Keep up the nightly reading at home. It is the best thing you can do for your child to increase their decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills. Of course the greatest benefit of all is to spend special time together reading--a life-long skill.

Thank you to all who have touched base with me about your child or children. Remember you only need to give me a call to visit your child's Title I class--we would be glad for you to join us.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lucy Hardy

Happy January:

All students in Title who are in first grade and up have started off their year with a one-on-one reading turn with me to assess what book level they are currently reading at. I am pleased to say that the majority of my students are where they should be in accuracy--we need to do more work in areas of comprehension and fluency.

Most classroom teachers require nightly reading. Some of my Title students have been given colorful book logs in which to record their nightly reading, as well as comments from the adult reader they may have read with. Students receive a colorful sticker for each log entry. If your child does not have one of these logs but would like one, please send in a note or contact me by email or phone.

I am participating in the District's kindergarten literacy program for reading readiness. This involves planning and administering some literacy games which the children are finding interesting and fun. My current need for one of these games is white bottle caps from screw-top bottles, 16-ounce size. Any caps you can provide would be appreciated.

Children really "take off" in their reading skills during these winter months. It is always an exciting time of year for me in terms of seeing the growth. I'm sure you notice it at home as well.

Coming soon will be our annual Consolidated School Book Swap. I work with our librarian, Mrs. Vennell, on this--it is always popular and something we look forward to. Please thinking of what books you would like to pass on.

As always, thank you for making reading an important part of your family life!

Mrs. Lucy Hardy, Title I Teacher

Happy November!

I am pleased to announce that Title I here at Consolidated will be co-sponsoring the Consolidated School Literacy Night on Tuesday, November 27, from 6:30 to 8 in our gym. The evening will consist of terrific handouts for you to use at home--lots of great tips included on how to enhance your family reading time. We will also play literacy games and have the opportunity to listen to great readers, including long-time educator Diana Abbott and our own Mrs. Pence, to name a couple. I have to share that despite being a youth leader from my teens on, attending and receiving a college degree in primary education, and reading all of my life, it was not until I heard Mrs. Abbott at the library story hour that I truly learned how to read. Come see firsthand some tips and techniques on how to make reading a story very special. Please join us for this evening. Light snacks will be provided.

I have shared with teachers my feedback and insights on each of your children and how they are progressing during their Title I classes. Take a moment to ask for that input during your conference time.

As the year progresses, we will be spending more time on what makes a good reader and a good writer. Your children are all focused and willing students, and I greatly enjoy working with them. Thank you for promoting and supporting literacy in your homes.

Mrs. Lucy Hardy
