January

Happy January:

All students in Title who are in first grade and up have started off their year with a one-on-one reading turn with me to assess what book level they are currently reading at.  I am pleased to say that the majority of my students are where they should be in accuracy--we need to do more work in areas of comprehension and fluency.

Most classroom teachers require nightly reading.  Some of my Title students have been given colorful book logs in which to record their nightly reading, as well as comments from the adult reader they may have read with.  Students receive a colorful sticker for each log entry.  If your child does not have one of these logs but would like one, please send in a note or contact me by email or phone.

I am participating in the District's kindergarten literacy program for reading readiness.  This involves planning and administering some literacy games which the children are finding interesting and fun.  My current need for one of these games is white bottle caps from screw-top bottles, 16-ounce size.  Any caps you can provide would be appreciated.

Children really "take off" in their reading skills during these winter months.  It is always an exciting time of year for me in terms of seeing the growth.   I'm sure you notice it at home as well.

Coming soon will be our annual Consolidated School Book Swap.  I work with our librarian, Mrs. Vennell, on this--it is always popular and something we look forward to.  Please thinking of what books you would like to pass on.

As always, thank you for making reading an important part of your family life!
