March

March 2008

Title I students are making great progress in their reading during the month of March.  Many students are also attending our weekly Consolidated Book Swap, co-sponsored by Title I and our Consolidated Library.  It has been great fun seeing what books students are bringing in to swap.

I have been involved in implementing a new program for our Kindergarten classes to meet the needs of our children requiring the most support in reading.  It is an early reading intervention program published by the Scott Foresman company, and includes a variety of letter identification and sound lessons, writing practice, and sound manipulation for sight vocabulary.  The program also includes a dinosaur puppet who makes an occasional appearance.  This is a brand new program started in February and it is being implemented District-wide.  The children have learned quickly how the program runs, and we will continue to monitor for progress.

Keep up the nightly reading at home.  It is the best thing you can do for your child to increase their decoding, comprehension, and fluency skills.  Of course the greatest benefit of all is to spend special time together reading--a life-long skill.

Thank you to all who have touched base with me about your child or children.  Remember you only need to give me a call to visit your child's Title I class--we would be glad for you to join us.

Sincerely,

 Mrs. Lucy Hardy
