February Notes

Our first delayed start seemed to go well from this end. Any Comments?

Information regarding the animal reports will be coming home tomorrow. Please look for this and discuss it with your student. Most of them are very ready and excited to get started on this project. Note that we will be writing the reports in class so the note taking on the 'webs' will be most important.

Also, February is African American History month. The children will be reading about notable African Americans as well as stories by and about African Americans. An oral report will be given on a book of the child's choice in late February.

We will be having a Valentine Party on Feb. 14th in the afternoon. A Valentine list will go home tomorrow too. We will be making our Valentine boxes in school. If you have an empty kleenex box with a top opening, we could use a few more.

We also need more kleenex for the room. There have been a lot of runny noses this year and kleenex use is way up!

We continue to be in constant communication with our police department to monitor the situation and assure student and staff safety.

We are thankful for the immediate and thoughtful response by our law enforcement agents in assisting us in keeping our school safe. We assure you that the safety of all will remain our top priority.

Below is the press release that our police have provided us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Thomas Farrell

Superintendent of Schools

Kennebunk Police Department

Press Release
January 9th, 2008

On 01-09-08, Jeffrey Stevens Jr., 19 of 2 Old Kennebunk Road in Lyman, ME was arrested and charged with Terrorizing pursuant to a threat made toward the Kennebunk High School.
Happy New Year

In spite of the cold weather, we are all glad to be back at school! We are getting right to work memorizing the times tables. I'm very pleased that five people already know the 0 through 5 tables. If you haven't been working on these tables at home, now is the time to start. Math is so much faster and easier when you don't have to stop to figure these out. We have learned all the small cursive letters and several of the capital letters. Students are encouraged to write their spelling words in cursive. Also, ask your student about nouns, verbs, subjects and predicates. On Tuesday, Pam Taylor a writing consultant for the District will be doing a lesson in our room.

Slow to Blog, Room 15

We are still a lively, busy bunch in room 15; I just can't seem to remember to blog or some days even how to get to the blog! We had a great visit from Chewonki telling us about bats. She even brought a Little Brown Bat (common in Maine) that we could observe as she moved around. Later that week we went to the Brick Store Museum to see the displays there and went into the attic where we saw thousands of items waiting to be shown. This was a great learning visit and so close by. We won't have any more field trips until February or later.

We are getting ready for our state projects. Posters of the chosen state will be made at home. We will send specific guidelines that will tell you what should be included on the poster.

A homework reminder: 20 minutes of reading, 10 minutes of math, 10 minutes of spelling, 5 minutes at least of + and - tables (Those that need this most don't seem to be doing it!)

A 4 day week next week and three the following. Happy Thanksgiving!

Week of September 24th

What a great day Sunday was! I hope everyone enjoyed it. The children are bringing home Sally Foster gift wrap and gift materials today. This will be a much lower key sale this year with no prizes or push. We do need to remember that it has been a great fund raiser for our school, allowing KPTA to purchase things for our children's use in school that we wouldn't otherwise have. If you have a computer, ordering over the internet is suggested. ( SallyFoster.com)

Please expect spelling homework on Monday. This will be due on Friday. I suggest working with the words and sentences a bit each night. Also, there should be a math paper Mon. through Thurs. This should take about 10 minutes. The other nightly homework is to read for 20 minutes or more nightly.

This Friday we will put on a short production about the Constitution at Friday Morning Meeting. All the third graders are in this production.
